The Senate on Wednesday approved a land exchange benefiting two Alaska Native corporations.

Cape Fox Corp. of Ketchikan and Juneau-based Sealaska Corp. would receive up to 12,000 acres of Forest Service land. In exchange, they would give up some mineral rights and an already-logged forest.

The new land is next to a gold mine the corporations are working with. It is also a well-used hunting, fishing, hiking and recreational area that environmentalists fear will be shut out.

The House would need to approve the bill for it to be sent to President Bush. The chamber will wrap up loose ends tomorrow.
