WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2002

The Senate late Tuesday passed a bill to settle Sandia Pueblo's land claim to the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, the Associated Press reports.

The bill extinguishes the tribe's claim to 10,000 acres of land in the mountains. In its place is a federally-protected preservation area.

The tribe will be able to hunt and use the area for ceremonial purposes. The tribe has criminal and civil jurisdiction over Indians on the land.

The House has yet to pass the bill.
