The newly elected chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut was praised by local leaders on Thursday for trying to improve their often rocky relationship.

Michael Thomas wants to work with the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston. He held a preliminary meeting yesterday and the leaders said they would continue talks.

The towns have opposed the tribe's land-into-trust applications and complain about the impacts of the tribe's casino.
