S.D. Indian vote was challenged

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2002 Republicans in South Dakota challenged the vote count on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation but were turned down by a judge, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports. The polls in Todd County, which encompasses the reservation, opened early by mistake. Sen. Tim Johnson (D) carried the county. The difference in votes between Johnson and challenger John Thune is 528, within the margin of 844 for a recount. After results are certified next Tuesday, the recount would be held November 25.
