GOP control impacts Indian affairs

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2002 Republican control of the Senate returns chairmanships of legislative committees back to the controlling party. For Indian Country, that means Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) would replace Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) as head of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. The change isn't likely to make a major impact as the panel has typically been run in a bipartisan fashion and the chair and vice-chair take turns presiding over hearings. Also affecting Indian affairs is a change for the Senate Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Department of Interior. Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), the ranking member has been elected governor of Alaska, so another Republican would take the chairman's seat from Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.). The House remains in GOP control. Get the Story:
