MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2002 "Friday kicked off a monthlong celebration of American Indian culture, the result of the American Indian Heritage Month Act, passed by Congress on Aug. 3, 1990. There are 44,241 American Indians in Colorado, or 1 percent of the state's population, according to the census. In the past 34 years in Colorado, Indian activism, politics, social and cultural activities and accomplishments have included: • The establishment of the Indian Education Program at the University of Colorado in 1969. • The founding of the Native American Rights Fund in 1970. • The debut of the American Indian Movement in Denver in 1970. . .
