MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2002 PBS premieres "Alcatraz Is Not an Island," a film about the American Indian take-over of the former prison, this month. The film, by James Fortier, features never-before-seen footage of the 19-month occupation. The standoff raised awareness of Native issues and spurred policy changes including President Nixon's signing of the self-determination act. Get the Story:
