The race for control of the nation's largest tribe is a battle of old and not so old.

Navajo Nation President Kelsey Begaye is facing a tough challenge from Joe Shirley, who took the most votes in a tribal primary. Critics say Begaye has not made government reforms, fought crime and helped economic development.

Shirley is questioned for his ties to the mining industry, which has typically been on the opposite side of the fence on tribal issues. His running mate, Frank Dayish, is a political newcomer who is a mining lobbyist.
