Senator Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) told tribal leaders on Wednesday that he isn't anti-Indian despite supporting a moratorium on federal recognition and questioning the status of a Pequot tribe.

Dodd spoke to the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) meeting in Connecticut. "I don't want to be accused of being anti-Indian," he said, according to the Associated Press.

Dodd later told The Hartford Courant he won't try to revive his moratorium unless he gains more support. "I only got 15 votes," he told the paper.

"I'm a damn good friend of Indian country," he said during his speech.
