Navajo Nation presidential candidate Joe Shirley says his views on the tribe's lawsuit against mining giant Peabody Coal were not interpreted properly.

In an interview with The Farmington Daily-Times, Shirley said he "supports" a settlement but that it is up to the tribal council and other tribal entities to pursue one. He said President Kelsey Begaye also supports a settlement.

The Navajo Nation has a federal conspiracy lawsuit against the Peabody, alleging it conspired with Department of Interior officials to suppress information from the tribe. The tribe ended up signing a less than favorable lease for coal mining as a result.
