Navajo candidate backtracks on Peabody

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2002 Navajo Nation presidential candidate Joe Shirley says his views on the tribe's lawsuit against mining giant Peabody Coal were not interpreted properly. In an interview with The Farmington Daily-Times, Shirley said he "supports" a settlement but that it is up to the tribal council and other tribal entities to pursue one. He said President Kelsey Begaye also supports a settlement. The Navajo Nation has a federal conspiracy lawsuit against the Peabody, alleging it conspired with Department of Interior officials to suppress information from the tribe. The tribe ended up signing a less than favorable lease for coal mining as a result. Get the Story:
