Indian dispute derails parks bill

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2002 A dispute over a proposed casino in California has shelved an omnibus parks bill, The Washington Post reports. The Post does not explain why provisions preventing the Ewiiaapyaap Tribe from starting a casino within three years were to be placed in the package. But it does quote Marnie Funk, spokesperson for the Republicans on the House Resources Committee, as saying "it's a shame" that all sorts of parks projects have been delayed. The Ewiiaapyaap Tribe wants to open a casino on land currently housing an Indian health center. The other tribes that are part of the Kumeyaay Nation have gotten involved, with the Viejas Band opposing the Ewiiaapyaap project. Get the Story:
