Stevens: Too many Alaska Native tribes

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2002 Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) plans to introduce legislation to change the way federal funds are distributed to Alaska Native governments. Stevens complains that there are too many tribes in the state. The large number means $500 million in federal funding doesn't go as far as it should, he said. Stevens wants to redistribute funds on a regional basis, an idea some tribal leaders oppose. Get the Story:
