Preliminary results of a study of South Dakota's justice system confirm that Native Americans face disparate treatment, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports.

The paper examined parts of the report, which has not been made public. It was commissioned by Gov. Bill Janklow (R) in response to a U.S. Civil Rights Commission report that said much the same thing about Native Americans.

The study didn't look into the reason for the disparities. But they included: Indians were denied bond at a higher rate than non-Indians; Indian females were over-represented in the state prison system; and Indians served longer prison sentences for violent crimes with the exception of assault and vehicular homicide convictions.
