N.M. drops charges against tribal member

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2002 The state of New Mexico dropped felony cattle rustling charges against a member of the Navajo Nation. A New Mexico district attorney said the alleged crime occurred on trust land. It took the state five weeks to arrive at this conclusion. The charges were brought against J.C. Begay, a Navajo Nation council delegate. The tribe arrested him with an order to extradite him to the state. Begay asserted his innocence throughout the case.
