THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2002 Residents of the Connecticut city of Bridgeport "professed unwavering support" for a tribal casino, according to The New London Day. "I think it will be good for Bridgeport," a truck driver told the paper. Supporters believe the development will revitalize the economy, counter the highest property tax rate in country and provide needed jobs. But all those hopes were dashed when the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe withdrew its offer to locate a casino in the city pending federal recognition. According to the paper, city officials balked at the deal, "questioned the tribe's legitimacy" and asked for more time to consider the offer. Get the Story:
