TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2002 A Navajo Nation council member is disputing charges that he violated New Mexico state livestock law. On October 1, delegate J.C. Begay was arrested by Navajo tribal police. Navajo Nation president Kelsey Begaye had issued an order for his extradition to face state felony charges of larceny of livestock and unlawful branding. According to The Farmington Daily-Times, Begay blamed the controversy on Begaye, the federal government, local tribal officials and the media. Begaye made remarks in Navajo and in English at a meeting yesterday. Begay was not turned over to the state and was instead released on his own recognizance. He has not been charged under tribal law.
