MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2002 A Bush administration official said there is $1 billion in unused funds for Indian Country housing programs. Michael Liu is the assistant secretary for Indian and public housing in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Of the $2.4 billion that has been appropriated for Indian Country from 1998 to 2001, he said only half has been spent. Kristy McCarthy, executive director of the National American Indian Housing Council, disputes the suggestion. Her organization can cite countless examples of unmet need. The Senate just reauthorized the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act to give tribes and Indian housing authorities more control over the use of HUD funds. Get the Story:
