THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2002 Fleeing from persecution in Mexico in the late 1800s, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona has come a long way from its impoverished roots. After gaining federal status and land in 1978, the tribe has achieved economic success through its casino. It is passing along the gains to tribal members through entrepreneurial programs. The tribe is also working to sustain the local economy. The tribe has about 14,000 members, 3,400 of whom live on one of the Pascua Yaqui Reservation east of Tucson. The median household income is $22,000, which still trails the state. Get the Story:
