Wis. governor backtracks on gaming

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2002 After coming into office opposing the expansion of Indian gaming, Wisconsin Governor Scott McCallum (R) is now willing to compromise amid sagging ratings and a booming budget bust. McCallum said he'll neogtiate longer casino compacts if tribes give more money to the state to patch up the deficit. Tribal leaders naturally are reacting with skepticism. "The reaction in Indian country was pretty much as expected - 'Take a hike, governor,'" wrote Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel columnists Cary Spivak and Dan Bice. McCallum's opponent is Democrat Jim Doyle. Doyle has a 7-percentage point lead in one poll. Get the Story:
