Department of Interior officials on Wednesday said at least 20,000 salmon have died in the Klamath River in northern California.

The cause of death appears to be suffocation due to infection of the gills. The department would not say if their denial of water to the fish spurred on the massive kill.

Yurok Tribe chairwoman Sue Masten and others sent 500 pounds of dead salmon to Secretary Gale Norton in protest.
