Five Nations land reform act in limbo

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2002

A bill to change the way land belonging to members of Oklahoma's Five Civilized Tribes is on hold pending discussions with the oil and gas industry.

Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith is to meet with the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association. The group claims the land reform act will affect economic development.

Currently, probate, leasing and other activities are under the jurisdiction of state courts, which has resulted in land going out of Indian ownership. The bill would restore authority to the Department of Interior.
