TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2002

The official period to challenge the recent federal recognition of the historic Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut ended on Monday.

The state of Connecticut, through attorney general Richard Blumenthal and five towns, is challenging Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb's decision. Gov. John G. Rowland (R) also supports the appeal.

Ten other towns have filed an "amicus" or friend of the court brief with the Interior Board of Indian Appeals.
