An independent study commissioned by The Arizona Republic claims the state's 17 tribal casinos generate nearly $1 billion in revenue for their communities.

Tribes were asked to comment on the estimates for each of their facilities. The paper said none responded.

The profits from each casino are almost impossible to estimate, according to gaming experts. As sovereigns, tribes have a right to protect their financial data.

The Indian gaming industry is worth about $12.7 billion, according to the National Indian Gaming Commission. The independent regulatory body requires tribes to submit data on their casino proceeds.
