BIA opposes Va. recognition bill

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2002 The House Resources Committee on Wednesday held a hearing on a bill to extend federal recognition to six Virginia tribes. The tribes are among the oldest state-recognized in the nation. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs said it opposes Congressional acknowledgment, saying the groups should instead petition through the lengthy and timely regulatory process. Get the Story:
