FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2002 The state of Connecticut and three towns on Thursday appealed Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb's decision to recognize the historic Eastern Pequot Tribe. The challenge was filed by state attorney general Richard Blumenthal and supported by Gov. John G. Rowland (R). The towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston also joined. The appeal alleges McCaleb stepped over the boundaries of the law by recognizing the tribe as the amalgamation of two separate petitioning groups. It also alleges the Eastern Pequot Tribe and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe do not meet the criteria for federal acknowledgment. The matter was filed with the Department of Interior Board of Indian Appeals. Get the Story:
