TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2002 University of North Dakota officials failed to respond to claims of a racially hostile environment over the school's use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname, federal investigators concluded. The Grand Forks Herald quotes a letter from the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights to UND president Charles Kupchella. It said the school didn't take "appropriate responsive action." The school signed an agreement with the DOE to revise its discrimination, harassment and grievance policies. The school agreed to federal monitoring. Area tribes and the majority of Indian students at the school oppose the "Fighting Sioux" nickname. The majority of alumni support it. Get the Story:
