The leaders of the Eastern Pequot tribes said they were confident their historic federal status would be upheld despite a challenge from the state of Connecticut.

Marcia Jones Flowers is chairwoman of the Eastern Pequot Tribe. James A. Cunha Jr. is chairman of the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. Both tribes have resided on a 224-acre reservation since the 17th century.

The tribes currently have separate governments and are working on a new structure pending final recognition.
