Highway plans near Haskell considered

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2002

The public will get a chance to comment tonight on a controversial highway expansion planned in Kansas.

Two options are offered by the state Department of Transportation. One would run through wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University at a cost of $105 million. This option can be avoided if the state pays $128.5 million for a more southern route.

Haskell students and officials, along with environmental groups, oppose construction through the wetlands. A local county commissioner is endorsing the southern route.

The public can offer views on the options or argue that neither one be pursued.
