The Department of Interior is "incapable" of making a fair decision on the remains of a 9,000-year-old Native man, The Seattle Times writes in an editorial today.

The department isn't alone on the Kennewick Man debacle, the paper notes. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which first handled the matter, also has a "history of less-than-neutral shenanigans," the editorial says.

"While [the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act] is important legislation that protects remains and artifacts of Native Americans, Kennewick Man — as science and Jelderks found — is clearly in a different category," the paper writes.
