TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2002 Indian gaming has failed, The Wall Street Journal writes in another editorial on the subject. "Federal policy toward the Indian community has long been a failed exercise in social engineering," the paper writes. "Indian casinos don't strike us a miracle solution, except for the gambling interests who'll get rich." The paper claims the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) "made it easier for federal authorities to recognize tribes," although the law has nothing to do with acknowledgment. The paper also claims recent decisions spurred the Senate Indian Affairs Committee to hold hearings on recognition even though Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), the panel's vice chairman, has tried for years to reform the system. The committee also held hearings on the subject in May 2000. The paper also says Bureau of Indian Affairs researchers proved that the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe were not Indian tribes. Get the Story:
