Native voters in South Dakota are being heavily courted by Democrats for the upcoming November elections.

Democrats are going to reservations to encourage more tribal members to register to vote. Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, has set up re-election offices on every reservation.

Republicans also want the tribal vote but they don't have anyone in the state to do Native outreach. Polls, however, show Johnson and his GOP challenger Rep. John Thune nearly tied.

Native Americans make up about 8 percent of the state population.
