MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2002 The Billings Gazette continues its series on the Nez Perce War of 1877. The war and its battles were fought by five Nez Perce bands who refused to be confined to a reservation in Idaho. The bands entered Montana in late July of 1877 on their ill-fated quest to reach Canada. Today's story describes the bands crossing the Yellowstone River on September 12. They ran into local settlers but no large battles were reported. Two ranch hands were found dead. There's also a story describing a woman whose father filed a claim against the government for damages suffered during the battles. He was awarded $654.50 but has never been paid. Get the Story:
