Alaska Natives more often in foster care

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2002 Alaska Native children are disproportionately represented in the foster care system in Alaska, according to state and national statistics. About 25 percent of children in the state are Alaska Native. But as of July 2002, 60 percent of children taken from their homes Native. This is up from 50 percent in 1996. A study by Casey Family Programs, a national child welfare organization, says that Alaska Native children are more than five times as likely as white children to be taken from their parents because of home situations.
