FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2002

The National Park Service in South Dakota has postponed a dinosaur bone dig opposed by Oglala Lakota tribal members.

The dig is to occur on land owned by the tribe but managed by the park service under a 1979 memorandum. The park service will talk with tribal officials before proceeding.

Tribal members, supported by president John Yellow Bird Steele, say the dig will upset the area where their ancestors gathered after the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.
