The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has begun a shellfish project in nearby Rhode Island.

The tribe growing 35 million clams and 2 million oysters on the Pawcatuck River. The shellfish are considered environmental friendly because they help clean the river.

The project is a small part of a larger one the tribe is hoping to start. Federal approval of a $10 million fisheries venture is pending.
