Tribes consider Sacagawea or Sakakawea

FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2002 The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation voted this week to change the spelling of the name of one of its most famous citizens. But after elders said they were consulted, Sakakawea's name is staying put. Sakakawea is used throughout North Dakota, where the tribes are based. Sacagawea is used elsewhere. Get the Story:
