DOJ awards police grants to tribes

FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2002 The Department of Justice has awarded Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants to tribes. The grants will allow the tribes to boost their law enforcement forces. In Montana, the Fort Belknap Tribes received more than $1.1 million; the Fort Peck Tribes received more than $1 million; the Blackfeet Tribe about $700,000 and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes received about $300,000.. In Oklahoma, 11 tribes will share in $1.34 million. The tribes include: the Choctaw Nation, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, the Muscogee Creek Nation, the Citizen Pottawatomie Nation, the Comanche Tribe, the Kaw Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe, the Miami Tribe, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and the Wyandotte Tribe.
