THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2002 Oglala Lakota activists in South Dakota are protesting a planned archaeological dig in the Badlands where tribal ancestors gathered after the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. The area is part of the Pine Ridge Reservation but is under supervision by the National Park Service, according to a 1976 agreement. Tribal activists met with Oglala Lakota President John Yellowbird Steele on Monday and he has expressed support. NPS disputes potential impacts on tribal or burial sites. The dig is set to take place August 12 through August 23. Oglala activists are planning a horse ride August 12 from Wounded Knee to the dig area known as the Stronghold. Tribal members have been camped out at the Stronghold since June. Ed. Note: The planned dig takes place in the Badlands National Park, not in the Black Hills, as was incorrectly stated.
