Wash. tribe confronts land-use problems

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2002 Tulalip tribal leaders have instituted a moratorium on all for-profit residential developments on their Washington reservation although legal questions remain on its effect on land owned by non-Indians. A federal court case has determined that a local county has no regulatory authority over Indian-owned lands. The decision is on appeal to the 9th Circuit. The moratorium was instituted in response to increased development for homes that some tribal members cannot afford. Get the Story:
