Pope canonizes first Indian saint

THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 2002 Pope John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint during an Aztec-inspired Mass in Mexico on Wednesday. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin lived in the 1500s. His visions of the Virgin Mary earned him miracle status within the Catholic Church. The mass was conducted in both Spanish and Nahuatl, an Aztec language. Get the Story:
