Pope urges justice for Mayan Indians

WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 2002 Pope John Paul II was in Guatemala on Tuesday to canonize the country's first saint and urge justice and respect for Mayan Indians who make up the majority of the population but are at the bottom of the social and economic ladder. Pedro de San José Betancur became the 463rd saint. He was known for his work advocating for Indian welfare. The Pope is in Mexico today to canonize the first Indian saint. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin was an Aztec man who experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary in 1531. Get the Story:
