Fire threatens Mesa Verde ruins

WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 2002 A fire in Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado has consumed more than 2,000 acres. The Long Mesa Fire, believed to be started by lightning, is coming close to the park's historic Puebloan structures. Park officials expect the ruins to be spared, however. Artifacts and human remains have been safeguarded, the park said. The park is closed to the public. Employees have been evacuated. Get the Story:
