TUESDAY, JULY 30, 2002 The following is a statement by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, regarding Tom Slonaker's resignation as Special Trustee for American Indians. July 30, 2002. "I'm disappointed that a second Special Trustee resigned because successive administrations refuse to empower that position with any real authority." "Mr. Slonaker's resignation is just one more signal that legislation is clearly necessary to cause reform to the Interior Department's management of Indian trust funds. It's shameful that we can work to reform corporate America, yet we cannot resolve a century-old problem of returning Indian money to its beneficiaries." "The only immediate solution is for Congress to be more aggressive, much like the courts, to pursue changes to enforce more accountability and finally bring resolution to Indian beneficiaries."
