Bush makes Yucca Mountain official
WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2002

President Bush on Tuesday signed a bill that officially declares Yucca Mountain in Nevada the nation's nuclear waste dump.

Yucca Mountain is located on Western Shoshone land covered under an 1863 treaty. The land has never been ceded to the federal government, other than what the Indian Claims Commission called white settlement.

Area tribes and state officials and politicians oppose the site. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is seeking approval of legislation to limit funds to Yucca Mountain.

Yucca Mountain and nuclear waste are the subject of a broadcast of Native America Calling today. Check http://www.nativeamericacalling.org for more details.
