A Montana judge on Tuesday ordered the release of documents related to the state's participation in the slaughter of bison in Yellowstone National Park.

Environmental activists asked for the documents over a year ago but got no response until they filed a lawsuit. Judge Thomas Honzel already ordered the state Livestock Department to comply with their request but the activists came back to court because they said they were hindered.

Under a federal-state management plan, the state is allowed to shoot bison that wander out of the park.
