Anti-tribal candidate's bid defeated

MONDAY, JULY 22, 2002 Tribal critic Jeff Benedict won't be in the running for Connecticut's 2nd Congressional district. The author failed to gain enough support at the state's Democratic convention on Saturday to force a primary. He said he would support Joe Courtney, who secured the nomination. Courtney will face incumbent Republican Rob Simmons, who received his party's nod this weekend as well. Simmons campaigned on helping resolve a land dispute affecting the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation but critics say he has not followed through. Simmons also pledged to reform the federal recognition process but critics here also point to his lack of success. Get the Story:
