TUESDAY, JULY 16, 2002 "Indian people in the U.S. and Canada are scrambling desperately to save their languages from hundreds of years of invading armies, missionaries, mission schools and government boarding schools that systematically stripped away 40,000 years of linguistics virtually overnight. From them, we learn that English-only creates a vacuum of history, culture, tradition and customs that we'll never know. I find it interesting that people - white and brown, rich and poor - are still divided over the languages of the conquerors. . ." Get the Story:
