The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board on Monday held the first of three final hearings into a proposed nuclear waste facility on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation.

The hearing focused on the potential of an airplane crash at the facility. The state wants the board to take into account the possibility but attorneys for a consortium of private utility companies and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission don't believe it should be under consideration.

The Skull Valley Tribe signed a lease to store up to 44,000 tons of highly radioactive waste on the reservation for up to 20 years.
