A federal law designed to prevent the purchase of guns by domestic abusers hasn't always worked, The Washington Post reports today.

The paper cites a forthcoming General Accounting Office report that showed 3,000 domestic abusers bought guns between 1998 and 2001. Federal authorities had to confiscate the weapons upon learning of the illegal purchases, the paper says.
