Will Pequot tribes be recognized?

MONDAY, JUNE 24, 2002 The Bureau of Indian Affairs is set to announce its decision on the federal recognition of two Pequot tribes in Connecticut. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb said he would finalize a ruling by tomorrow. A delay is possible. The Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe were granted preliminary recognition during the Clinton administration. McCaleb will be issuing a final determination. The tribes are based on the same reservation. They were recognized by the state in the 1600s. Connecticut has two federally-recognized tribes: the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. Get the Story:
